After an embarrassing start to their pre-season tour of North America, having lost 4-2 at the hands of New York Red Bulls in New Jersey, Jose Mourinho made sure there was no slacking in Chelsea training just a day later on Friday.

Back at their Canadian base of the Montreal Impact Training Centre, the Blues’ multi-million pound squad prepared ahead of their next tussle in the United States against French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The game, which takes place on Saturday night at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina will be the Premier League champions’ final showdown before their much-anticipated July 29 fixture against Luis Enrique’s treble-winning Barcelona side in Washington DC.

If selected on Saturday, Chelsea’s new signing from Stoke, Asmir Begovic, will hope for a much more assured performance than he produced his debut against the Red Bulls

The Bosnian was one of nine changes in the second half of the game and looked totally exposed, fumbling a cross with almost his first touch on 50 minutes and then having an horrendous mix-up with John Terry, which allowed Franklin Castellanos to score the New York’s equaliser on 52 minutes.

Begovic was also responsible for the Red Bulls’ fourth goal and after the match manager Mourinho said: ‘I think he was tired, the same as Thibaut Courtois and when goalkeepers are very tired, co-ordination is low, agility doesn’t exist, speed reaction doesn’t exist.’

Chelsea’s first game of their league title defence is at home to Swansea on August 8, but only after they have faced Fiorentina at Stamford Bridge for their final pre-season tussle, three days beforehand.
