The Chilean has been looking for homegrown talent after the departures of English players Frank Lampard, James Milnerand Micah Richards.

Richards revealed that Delph had sought his advice over a move to the Etihad, telling him to leave if he could get guaranteed playing time.

‘He has asked me what I think about the situation,’ admitted Richards, who signed a four-year deal at Villa.

‘I wouldn’t say don’t go to Manchester City because if he’s playing well he could play. Joe Hart plays every week and he’s English but then he is world class.

‘If he’s going to give him the chance to play then it’s hard to turn down Champions League football.’

Villa manager Tim Sherwood has looked to address the huge loss of Delph, Villa’s player of the season, by agreeing a £9million deal for Lille midfielder Idrissa Gueye, with a work permit pending.
