Adrien Broner has lost his WBA super-lightweight title on the scales after failing to make weight before his fight with Ashley Theophane.

Brit-born Theophane hit the super-lightweight limit at 140lbs, but Broner – who has looked on the large side in the build-up to Friday’s fight – came in at 140.4lbs.

Broner had two hours to lose the 0.4lbs but failed to return to the scales.

The corpulent crisis means Broner (31-2-KO23) will not reclaim the belt if he wins at the DC Armory in Washington on April Fool’s Day. Yet Theophane (39-6-1-KO11) will claim the vacated title should he emerge victorious.

The mishap is the latest setback to befall Broner, who reportedly faces robbery and assault charges in his hometown of Cincinnati.

Broner’s size did not look befitting of a super middleweight all week, and Theophane was in a confident mood following the weigh-in, answering questions to the assembled media.

Asked if Broner’s half pound excess meant anything, he said: ‘It doesn’t mean anything, but why was he an hour late? He was trying to lose that weight. He was in the back trying to lose that weight, so the half a pound aint nothing but it means more because he tried to lose the weight.

‘We going to get that win. It has shown he’s stressed out. He looks stressed up there. He’s looked stressed all throughout press conferences.’

Theophane was questioned about what the 26-year-old American said to him near the scales, replying: ‘He said he’s going to beat my a*** and I said, “I look forward to seeing that happen”.

‘I’ve trained for a war. I’ve trained with young guys who are stong, fast, so I’m ready for him, ready for whatever he brings,’ added the London-born fighter, 35.

‘If he wants to lose the weight, he can lose the weight. If he don’t make the weight he has to pay extra money,’ said Theophane.

According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, a deal was subsequently made between the two camps for the fight to go ahead.

This is the second time that Broner has been stripped of a belt before a fight. Broner – nicknamed ‘The Problem’ – also tipped the scales before a mandatory light lightweight title defence against mandatory challenger Vicente Escobedo in July 2012.

Broner had said all the right things in the build-up to the bout, and claimed to be focused on the task in hand.

‘I have tunnel vision. It’s fight time. I’m locked-in until I get the job done.

‘Right now I have to focus on this fight. I’m keeping my mind in the right state. I’m not just doing this for me. It’s for my family. It’s bigger than just me,’ he said in the final press conference.

But his discretion on the scales will add to Theophane’s belief that he can win a belt in his first title fight.
